About Us

Responding to a Need

In The Beginning

Moyra Stephen, who has a son with special needs, experienced great difficulty finding qualified, in-home care for him. She discovered that this difficulty was one experienced by many other families in the community; the need for qualityhome care was a serious problem. With a background in marketing, providing in-home daycare and volunteer work Moyra realized she had the skills, experience and knowledge to change that. In 1985 she founded Cardinal Nannies and Companions Inc., a decision that changed her life, the life of her son and all those families who had been searching for qualified, reliable, compassionate, in-home care-givers. Moyra and Cardinal Nannies & Caregivers Inc. continue to fill those needs, needs that today are greater than ever.

Our society has changed drastically in a few generations. Today’s family is, more often than not, a two-income family with both parents working outside the home and often working different hours. And there are more single parent families than ever before.

Day Care Centres are often unavailable, inconvenient, inflexible, expensive and do not provide one-on-one care. For these reasons, many families have decided that a nanny, live-in or live out, is the best solution to provide the quality care they want for their children and their entire family.

It’s also a different world for the elderly and disabled. Not only do we no longer have the extended families of a few generations ago, able and willing to care for their loved ones, but today’s seniors and those with special needs prefer to live as independently as possible for as long as possible. They would prefer to stay in their own homes, even when some assistance is required. Our goal at Cardinal is to provide the right level of assistance to our clients at each stage in life, to maximize their quality of life.

The Cardinal Team

Built on the Cornerstones of Integrity and Professionalism

Cardinal Nannies & Caregivers Inc. provides honest, reliable and professional caregivers who are responsible, caring people.

We recruit caregivers who choose to work one-on-one with clients rather than in group situations. Caregivers who want to make a long-term commitment and help people, whatever their needs, enjoy their lives to the fullest.

Some of our nannies have their Early Childhood Education (ECE), Early Childhood Assistant (ECA), Child and Youth Worker (CYW), Social Service Worker (SSW), and Developmental Service Worker (DSW) and many caregivers have their Personal Support Worker (PSW), Health Care Aide (HCA) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN). We recruit from local communities for our live-out positions, and across Canada for our live-in positions.  We place many nannies from Quebec in live-in positions in Ontario. This has been a very successful cultural exchange as the French speaking nannies tutor the children in French while improving their English skills.

Screening Process

Because People Make the Difference

Cardinal Nannies & Caregivers Inc. has very stringent standards in recruiting caregivers.  Owner, Moyra Stephen, conducts personal interviews with local applicants for part-time and full-time live-out positions, long-term, and summer live-in positions. She travels regularly to Quebec to interview caregivers for positions for which both French and English are preferred.

Each applicant must supply a criminal record check and take our CPR course.  Only after we interview caregiver applicants, thoroughly check their references and are satisfied that they are the right fit do we arrange for them to meet you and your family in your home. We apply this same high standard to overseas applicants and ensure they meet all government requirements.

Our success rate is high, and as a result, a large percentage of our clients come to us through referrals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I hire a nanny instead of sending my children to daycare?

A nanny comes to your home during the hours you need them, so is much more flexible than daycare. You don’t have to wake your children up, or race home before a daycare closes.

What other benefits are there in having a nanny?

A nanny will look after your children in your home, so they can play with their friends, nap in their own bed, and go to school in their own neighbourhood. The nanny will make meals, and will do light housekeeping and laundry, so you can spend more time with your children when you return home.

What is the cost comparison between a nanny and daycare?

For two children, the cost of a nanny is comparable to daycare. For three children it is much more economical. For one child it may be more expensive, but it is always more convenient.

What is the most cost-effective method of having a nanny or caregiver?

Having a live-in nanny may be the most economical, as you may factor room and board into their wages.

What are the requirements for hiring a live-in nanny or caregiver?

The caregiver must have their own furnished bedroom, with a locked door. If it is possible for them to have a private bathroom and be in a different area of the house, that ensures everyone’s privacy. It should be a fulltime position.

Will you meet with me to discuss my options and the best solutions for my needs?

Yes, I do prefer to meet families before assisting them in hiring a caregiver or nanny, and our high success rate reflects that. The caregivers who apply to us are also reassured by this process.

Do you provide references for your service, and for the caregivers whom you recommend?

Yes, most of our business is through word-of-mouth, which is the best advertisement. We are very thorough in our screening process, which accounts for our reputation after 32 years in business.

Please contact us by phone or email to discuss other questions you may have. All phone requests and emails are returned within 2 business days. We have a twenty-four hour answering service.
